Native American Style Flutes By Mystic Flutes
Welcome
To Mystic Flutes and Mt. Dulcimers By Jim Bixel
I Handcraft wood flutes, in the style of the Indigenous people of the Americas.
The first flutes found in caves of North America were called Anasazi /Pueblo flutes. These flutes were rim blown and date back to the 7th century.
Although the the Native American Style Flute has evolved greatly over the years, the current style is much like you will find here on this site. Constructed with two air chambers – there is a wall inside the flute between the top (slow) air chamber and the bottom chamber which has the whistle and finger holes. The top chamber serves as a secondary resonator which gives the flute its distinctive sound. There is a hole at the bottom of the “slow” air chamber and a (generally) square hole at the top of the playing chamber. A block (or “fetish”) is tied on top of the flute.
I have been crafting wood flutes for some time now and take great pride in doing so.
The Appalachian Mt. Dulcimer:
It first appeared in the early 19th century among Scottish-Irish immigrant communities in the southern Appalachian Mountains, it is one of the first stringed instruments originating in North America.
On any given day I can be found in my shop, alternating between the Native American Flute, and creating of one of my Mt Dulcimers.
I hope you enjoy what you see on these pages.
Thank you for visiting!
